Looking forward to in-person Wheel of Fitness classes

Virtual sessions will continue this fall, says Jan MacVinnie

As the province relaxes restrictions, Flamborough Connects will be reconnecting with our community partners about the use of space for in-person Wheel of Fitness classes.

Our Wheel of Fitness program is a gentle exercise program for seniors that was developed in partnership with Sandra Sheffield-Young, a registered kinesiologist. Sandra and her company STEPS use an approach that accommodates many chronic conditions to help individuals improve and maintain functions of daily living, remain active and independent in their own homes.

Flamborough Connects launched a virtual Wheel of Fitness class in April 2021 as the pandemic lockdowns continued. The program has been successful and will continue into the fall.

We look forward to our in-person classes resuming once our community locations open up their spaces and determine what protocols may be necessary as a result of COVID-19. Our community locations are: Beverly Hills Estates, Freelton United Church, Troy Women’s Institute, West Flamborough Presbyterian Church, Eaton Place and the School Sisters of Notre Dame Motherhouse.

Flamborough Connects also offered educational sessions online using Zoom during the past year. Virtual sessions are planned for the fall and if possible, we will incorporate an in-person option in locations offered by our community partners.

Fall sessions include the following:

• Understanding Arthritis, presented by the Arthritis Society on Sept. 21 to mark Arthritis Awareness Month.

• An Update on Cannabis, presented by Hello Medical Cannabis on Oct. 14, near the third anniversary of the legalization of cannabis in Canada.

• Taking Charge of Your Brain’s Health, a four-week series presented by the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton-Halton, covering Normal Aging, the MIND Diet, Exercise and What to do if you’re worried about someone. The sessions will be held Sept. 22 and 29 and Oct. 6 and 13.

If you have questions or would like to sign up for the Wheel of Fitness or any of the educational sessions, call Flamborough Connects at 905-689-7880 or email admin@flamboroughconnects.ca.
