Flamborough Connects focuses on senior job seekers Feb. 12

More and more older adults are postponing retirement.

According to Statistics Canada, “In May 2016, the employment rate of Canadians aged 65 and older stood at 13.9 per cent. This rate was 8.4 per cent in 2001. This increase is linked to several factors. Some seniors remain active in the labour market by choice, while others do so out of necessity.”

The numbers are going up, there are limited employment services for older workers, and they face barriers in the workplace.

With generous funding from an Ontario Seniors Community Grant and in collaboration with PATH Employment and the Flamborough Chamber of Commerce, Flamborough Connects is launching the 2022 Community Connector Series and focusing two seminars on supporting older workers and the businesses that hire them.

Catherine Johnston, the community outreach co-ordinator for PATH Employment Services, will facilitate the sessions. Her main role is to raise awareness about PATH and its services to the Greater Hamilton Area: identifying needs and creating the bridges and partnerships that best support businesses and those seeking sustainable employment opportunities.

On Saturday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., older adult job seekers are invited to join us to learn about finding rewarding employment. We will focus on technology, the online job search, job placement supports, and the reasons why older workers make fantastic additions to a workplace.

The seminar will be virtual on Zoom and feature a pre-registration package filled with resources, treats, and opportunities for fantastic prizes, including an Amazon Fire 7 Tablet, Amica gift basket and more.

Older adult job seekers are encouraged to register before Feb. 10. Visit www.flamboroughconnects.ca/events for online registration — Call 905-689-7880 or email admin@flamboroughconnects.ca for more information.

The Community Connector Series also features a free, in-person lunch ‘n learn and Zoom event for all Flamborough and Greater Hamilton businesses on Thursday, March 3, from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

Businesses are invited to enjoy lunch and talk about the many advantages of hiring older workers and the incentives and support businesses through employment service agencies.

The limited capacity in-person event will take place at the Hamilton Technology Centre in Waterdown. For more information and to register, visit www.flamboroughchamber.ca/events.
