FLAMBOROUGH CONNECTS: New format, location for volunteer appreciation night a big hit

Evening shone a light on all who make Flamborough a great place to live

Thank you, Volunteers!

We had a fabulous night at the 2024 Flamborough Volunteer Appreciation Event, enjoying an amazing dessert buffet and hearing about the fantastic work being done by volunteers in Flamborough. Flamborough Connects proudly recognized 15 community organizations and their volunteers with certificates.

And thank you so much to Ward 12 Coun. Craig Cassar, Ward 13 Coun. Alex Wilson, Ward 15 Coun. Ted McMeekin and MPP Donna Skelly for providing certificates to all of our volunteers. Many thanks to our sponsors Red Hill Car Wash, The Firehall Dentist, BLR Waterdown and Symposium Restaurant Waterdown. We would also like to thank Connon Nurseries for donating two gorgeous planters and Flamborough Seniors Centre for allowing us to use their beautiful space.

This year, the Volunteer Appreciation Celebration moved from an awards format to wider recognition of many volunteers and the important work they do across Flamborough. We also heard about all the incredible things volunteer-driven community organizations are doing across Flamborough that benefit our residents.

Flamborough Connects is thrilled to have presented the volunteer appreciation festivities during Volunteer Week, a national week to recognize volunteerism across Canada. The theme for the 2024 National Volunteer Week was “Every Moment Matters.” Flamborough volunteers personify that, making so many moments matter across Flamborough!

Income tax time

Speaking of volunteers, Flamborough Connects wants to say a massive Thank You to our Income Tax volunteers who have worked diligently throughout the last months to file hundreds of tax returns for Flamborough residents with a modest income and a simple tax situation. This free program assists many in our community who are helped by the refunds, tax credits and benefits they receive, which amounts to over $650,000 annually. Flamborough Connects is proud to present this program which benefits our community.

If you missed the tax deadline, Flamborough Connects’ income tax volunteers are continuing to file returns beyond the deadline. This free program is part of the Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. Volunteers complete and file income tax returns for Flamborough residents of any age with a modest income ($35,000 single or $45,000 couple) and a simple tax situation. Bring in your income information slips and your receipts for deductions (rent, medical, childcare, tuition, donations, etc.). We have volunteers who file year-round!

News updates and events

Flamborough Connects would also like to extend a huge Thank you to Sierra, who has been our fabulous Social Service Worker Placement Student since September. Many of our clients got to know Sierra over the last months as a new smiling face at Flamborough Connects, always willing to lend a hand and help. She has been an invaluable addition to our team. Congratulations on your graduation, Sierra!

Flamborough Connects is also excited to present our May Education Session, “Navigating the Health Care System”. Join us for this 3-part presentation by the Hamilton Council on Aging on May 1, 8 and 15 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 80 Mill St. N, Waterdown. For more information or to register, connect with us at admin@flamboroughconnects.ca or 905-689-7880.

And here’s an event from our Community Events Calendar. The second annual Flamborough Family Fun Run for Food4Kids is being held in Memorial Park on Sunday, May 5 at 10 a.m. Presented by local Rotary Clubs, all proceeds from this event go to support Food4Kids in the local community. The program currently supports 30-plus kids throughout the Flamborough area and unfortunately that number keeps growing every year.

Colleen Stinson is the Executive Director of Flamborough Connects and a lifelong Flamborough resident.
